Image Compostiing

Image compositing is when you take two or more photos and strategically combine them using photoshop. This creates a single photo with other photos within it.  These kind of photos are created to make an inaccurate photo, realistic. The rule of thirds is the way you place your subject in a photo. This concept breaks the image into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. This can enhance composition by creating an additional point of interest. Rule of thirds can be broken in the right situation. If you break rule of thrids incorrectly  Professional photographers think about each and every detail before they take a photo. They think of things such as the lighting, the position of the subject, the background. I believe that editing a photo is a choice that the photographer must make. I think that editing a picture can make or break the photograph. Some photos need the editing to make them more interesting, while some shots look great just the way they are.

The strongest message I plan to communicate is through my first composite image concept. I plan to communicate the message that there are different perspectives to every situation. I will do this by taking a picture of someones face and a separate picture of a glass prism. The glass prism will replace the persons eyes. The picture of the person will be a portrait photo. The prism photos will be macro photos, with the whole photo fully focused. When the audience first views my photo, I anticipate that there eyes will go straight to the prism eyes.

Visual Statement

The topic that Lani and I chose is the struggles of depression. Our message is that depression can be beat. This is important to me because I have family members that have suffered from depression. Ive seen the impacts it has on their lives and how if affected them. This subject is important to Lani because she wants to show people that there is always a solution to things, and even severe depression can be conquered. My project goal is to inform my audience about depression and give hope to those that suffer from it. My partner, Lani, is our lead photographer/filmer. She created all the visuals for our video, and worked with me to find clips that match the script. When both the script and writing were completed we were able to piece together our visual statement video.

Some tips and tricks in Final Cut Pro that iv'e learned include speed ramping, audio mixing, color correction, and graphic match cut. We incorporated speed ramping into our video to create a more dramatic effect. Lani and I also used the color correction tool to turn the saturation down on our subject. This highlighted the rest of the image making the actor look gray. This was supposed to represent the actor feeling down. It is important to use the FCPX Libraries, Events, and Projects Properly to keep your files organized and prevent losing your own files, or others. The audio levels vary drastically because depending on the visuals, the audio has to go along. Sometimes there are multiple different audios playing at once, and you have to eliminate some to create a clear audio. I think our audio displays a higher quality than our video. We recorded our audio in a quiet place and it came out very clear.

The biggest challenge for my group was finding time to record videos, and gather our visuals. To overcome this we planned out our visuals first, and then put aside time to record the videos we needed. Our group dynamic was a perfect mixture of teamwork, and conflict. Although both Lani and myself worked pretty equally on this project, I think Lani was the driving force of our team. She is familiar with Final Cut Pro and did most the editing, while I knew close to nothing about editing. Lani was able to teach me some tricks from FCPX allowing me to contribute to the editing process. The most enjoyable part of the project for me was writing my script because I really enjoy writing and creating the story. I agree with our critique results because we turned our project in on time, included all the required material, and put our best effort into the project.

Modern Art Movement

The cultural movement that gave rise to expressionism was a response to widespread anxiety about humanity's increasingly different relationship with the world. Lost feelings of authenticity and spirituality also contributed to the development of expressionism. Expressionism is an art movement that expresses a feeling, reaction, or response. Arts and communication today still expresses emotions and reactions.  My personal thoughts of expressionism is that it is a very positive art movement. Although the painting is still, it captures the movement of emotions of objects and people.

The Scream, Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch created the example of expressionism that i chose, his painting is called "The Scream". I think Edvard Munch was trying to communicate the pain he felt when he was a child. At age five his mother died of Tuberculosis. Shortly after his older sister died, causing his father to become depressed and aggravated. I think that the feeling of loosing all his family as a child was expressed through "The Scream". I do think that an artist can persuade someones perception or opinion through artwork. I think that everyone perceives artwork differently, and depending on what you see, your opinion will follow. I believe that the advances in technology have hindered the cultural impact of art production.

Workplace Safety

The goal of our project was to inform our audience about OSHA and display examples of OSHA's regulations. OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Act. This was put into action to assure safe and healthful working conditions by enforcing standards, and providing training, outreach, education and assistance. My teammates are Paris Tangelder and Patrick Peters. All of the team members served as actors/actresses along with filming/editing. I think Paris deserves recognition for her effort on the video editing. She showed the most experience in Imovie, and led the rest of the group while editing our movie.

My biggest takeaway from this project was learning about safety and health in the workplace (OSHA). I learned the importance of having regulations and there affects on the workplace. These rules prevent accidents and ensures the work environment remains safe. Our groups highest scoring area was the entertainment value and relevance of answers. The lowest scores were in the clarity of audio. A solution to this could have been to speak clearly and avoid windy areas. If we were to do something differently I would shoot all of our scenes in a location shielded by the wind. I think this would clarify the audio and increase our production value.

Art & Design

This Photo was downloaded from a Royalty free website.

The Elements of Art that I have used are line, shape, form, value, space, and texture. I first used line to trace the contour of my image. Within those lines I created shape to make up the sections of my picture. Next, I created my texture where I made scribbles. I used value by either making my scribbles tighter, or farther apart. The value and shading transformed my shapes into 3-demential forms. All together my photo was able to give off the illusion of space. By controlling my brush size, I was able to create a more gradual value scale. The most enjoyable part of this project was selecting my image, and the most challenging part was making the texture and details look realistic.

This landscape photo was taken by Tierra Lathrop, at Hideaways Beach.

Some similarities or my still image and landscape is that they both have value in them. You can clearly see in both that there is a range from black to white and everything in between. This value gives the effect of depth and shows the highlights/shadows. Another element of art that both my images use is texture. The still image uses a crosshatching and scribble texture. The landscape uses crosshatching, paper effect, and a diagonal brush stroke. Some differences include the reality of my images. The still image is made completely of line drawing. While the landscape image is an original image with multiple effects on it. I was able to refine the image using more advanced filters and effects. I adjusted the sharpness and shadows. I also applied filters such as crosshatch, sidestrokes, and the paper texture. I was very happy with the outcome of my image when I first finished. When I inserted the image to my blog the quality decreased and I don't like it's appearance as much.

This photo was taken by Tierra Lathrop at Kalihiwai Ridge.

The photo I used for my portrait was taken by me, at my home in my backyard. It is a photo of my friend, her name is Lily. This person is important to me because we have been very good friends for many years. This image uses line in my contour of the line drawing. It uses shape in the line drawing, which turns into forms as I add texture. Value is being used in the tightness or sparseness of my crosshatching, along with the color scale of my pencil drawing. The pattern of her hair shows texture. Space is used to create the illusion of reality in my pencil drawing. The color in my background image is represented by the texture/shadows in my line drawing. My critique results for the still life and mix were filled with mostly Professional and Expert scores. My landscape was mostly Professional and Amateur. I agree with these results, for the still life and mix photo I worked very hard and I think I deserved those grades. I think my scores for the landscape were higher than I would rate myself. I am not impressed by my landscape pencil drawing. Overall I am happy with the results.

Audio Production

Intonation and inflection can be used to maintain the interest of your audience by keeping everyone engaged and interested in the subject matter. By using intonation, it transforms speaking to be exciting and full of emotion. Adding inflection to speaking helps the audience understand the mood and context of the situation. My role in this assignment is the team leader. Being the team leader entails organizing the online files, assigning jobs to group members, administrating the recording process, making sure everyone is on task and everyone knows what they should be doing. It is extremely important to practice the script before recording so that everyone is comfortable with their speaking, and knows the recording material. All team members must become familiar with there speaking parts before taking the audio recording.

I think my team did a pretty good job at meeting the project goal of communicating a specific message to our audience, though the audience was not as engaged as they could have been. I think the reason for that is our subject matter was not very interesting compared to other groups. We could improve this by applying more intonation and inflection to our script. The obstacles we faced was having time to practice and becoming comfortable with your speaking. If I was required to do this project again I would manage our time better so that we could have rehearsed our script more.

Proprietary Information

This Image was created by Tierra Lathrop. The photo was taken in Kalihiwai, Kauai.

Copyright infringement is when you use or "steal" another persons work without permission, that has been protected by copyright law. Some penalties for copyright infringement include, having to pay the amount of damages and profits, pay fines between $200 to $150,000 for each work you infringed, you must pay for all the attorneys fees and cost of court, and violators may even serve jail time. Fair use of others material is a very general statement, but may include commentary, criticism, parodies, and quoting. When making commentary or critiquing, you can quote lines from a song, book movie, etc.

When something is confidential, it is not accessible to the public. Some things that I want to keep private is my bank account information, my social security number, and the password to my phone/computer. Social media has a huge impact on confidentiality, and the privacy of information. In social media and online programs, many people are posting information such as, email, phone number, and their home address. This is allowing anyone on the internet to access that information. My stance on censorship is somewhere in the middle. I agree with the 1st Amendment, that everyone should have the freedom of speech. On the other hand I think that there should be some kind of filter on what is acceptable so say and do.
